TF2 Trading Safety

Recognize common scam patterns before they turn into lost items or a compromised account.

Important Security Reminder

Valve and Steam representatives will never ask you to transfer items for verification.

Do not enter your Steam credentials on unfamiliar websites. Check the domain before signing in.

Impersonation scams

Scammers may copy a display name, avatar or profile style. Verify the underlying Steam account instead of trusting appearances.

Fake middlemen

A third party may be introduced as a trusted holder. Do not transfer items simply because someone claims another account is reputable.

Fake Steam login pages

Phishing pages imitate Steam sign-in screens. Open Steam through a trusted bookmark or official destination rather than a stranger’s link.

Phishing links

Unexpected “tournament,” “vote,” “free item,” or “support” links can be used to steal credentials or session information.

API-related scams

Attackers sometimes manipulate trade behavior after account compromise. If a confirmation looks different from what you expected, reject it and secure the account.

Item switching

A visually similar item can be substituted before confirmation. Recheck every item, quality and attribute at the final step.

Misleading trade confirmations

Chat messages and screenshots are not the trade itself. The Steam confirmation screen is where you must verify the actual exchange.

Fake giveaways

Offers that demand credentials, deposits or item transfers before a prize should be treated as suspicious.

Fake support accounts

Scammers may pretend to be moderators or Valve staff. Use official Steam Support channels and never transfer items for an “investigation.”

Suspicious browser extensions

Extensions can access browsing data or change page behavior. Install only what you need and review permissions carefully.

Account recovery scams

Do not share recovery codes or let another person “help” by taking control of your account session.

A safe decision process

  1. Stop if a trade becomes urgent or confusing.
  2. Open Steam independently instead of following a message link.
  3. Verify the account identity and exact inventory items.
  4. Reject any request for passwords, Guard codes, recovery codes or item verification transfers.
  5. Secure the account first if you notice suspicious activity.
