Understand TF2 Items
A practical overview of common item qualities and attributes used across Team Fortress 2.
Community market values can change frequently. Always verify current information before completing a trade.
Unique items
The standard item quality seen on a large portion of weapons, cosmetics and other inventory items. “Unique” is a quality label, not a statement that only one copy exists.
Strange items
Items that can track selected gameplay statistics, commonly kills or other counters depending on the item and attached parts.
Vintage items
A historical quality associated with certain older items affected by past inventory changes. The label reflects item history, not guaranteed rarity or value.
Genuine items
A quality associated with specific promotional distributions. It is distinct from gameplay performance.
Collector's items
A special quality tied to the older chemistry set system. Collector’s quality does not by itself guarantee a particular market price.
Unusual items
Items that may carry special particle effects or other unusual attributes. Effect, item type and community demand can all influence how players compare them.
Killstreak items
Weapons with killstreak attributes can display streak counters and, at higher tiers, may add visual effects when a streak is active.
Australium items
Distinctive gold-finished weapons associated with Mann vs. Machine reward systems. They can also have Strange tracking behavior.
Cosmetic items
Wearable items that alter a class’s appearance. Cosmetics can have qualities, paints, styles and other attributes.
Crafting materials
Scrap, Reclaimed and Refined Metal are used in crafting and are also commonly referenced in community trading.
Attributes can stack
An item can have more than one meaningful attribute. For example, a cosmetic may have a quality, paint, custom name or unusual effect, while a weapon can combine quality with killstreak properties or stat tracking. Always inspect the exact item rather than relying on a short trade-chat description.
